About Torey Roderick

AQHA Professional Horseman. World and Congress Champion Trainer. Mindset Coach

I'm Torey. I currently specialize in training, showing and coaching clients to show the AQHA All-around events. I have coached clients and trained horses to multiple American Quarter Horse Congress Championships and Reserve Championships, and World and Reserve titles as well as Circuit Champions at shows all over the country including the Arizona Sun Circuit, Florida Gold and Gulf Circuits, Las Vegas Silver Dollar Circuit and many more. I have trained and shown successfully for the AQHA Honor Roll/ High Point as well as coached clients to numerous top ten honor roll achievements.

I enjoy my own success in the show pen but I especially enjoy the process of helping students to their own "light bulb" moments.

My Story

I grew up riding hunters and equitation at a local level. I rode naughty ponies, sale horses and anything I could get my hands on. I worked to ride and eventually began teaching lessons when I was in high school. I dabbled with dressage as well over the years and rode with any trainer, instructor or clinician that was available to me. I attended college at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA for a degree in Equine Industries. While attending UMASS, my summer internship in Connecticut turned into a full time assistant trainer position with World and Congress Champion trainers Jim and Lisa Farrell of Greyledge Farm. During my time in Connecticut I trained and showed American Quarter Horses for the AQHA all-around events and it became a life-long obsession. Not only did we train quarter horses but our doors were open to problem horses of all breeds and disciplines. I rode dressage horses, race horses, eventers, reiners, hunters, anything that came through the doors. We broke and rode mustangs, thoroughbreds, andalusians, arabians, warmbloods, draft horses, Tennessee walking horses, and gypsy vanners to name a few. After leaving Greyledge Farm I trained for several years with Multiple World and Congress Champion trainer Troy Green before going out on my own. I was recently in a partnership for several years with World and Congress Champion trainer Jess Bergantzel. I credit a lot of my success to the varied background of talented trainers and teachers I was able to learn and take knowledge from.

My interest in the sports psychology aspect of showing started about 14 years ago during my yearly mecca to the AQHA World Show in Oklahoma City. Slowly I have picked away at learning what I could in between my hectic work and show schedule. The last several years I have accelerated my interest, my pace and my passion in this mindset arena. Living in the Northeastern part of the country, I spend a lot of hours driving and am able to dissect a lot of content through audiobooks and podcasts. I use those long drives to my advantage to keep learning and now sharing... My goal with Mental Mastery is to be a liaison for busy horse people into the world of sports psychology and neuroscience. I want to provide as much usable, easily digestible content as possible to fellow equestrians who want to improve their craft. Much of my personal success was carved out through hard work and trial and error. If I had known the resources that were out there to help with the mental edge and confidence part of showing I would have been light years ahead. I hope to give participants valuable tools, insight and direction to continue the quest for knowledge and excellence.

Mental Mastery

The Mental Mastery workshops are visual power point-type presentations packed with short video clips, pictures, and scientific information broken up by activities and true stories of first hand victories and failures. The focus becomes how to link the content and make it pertinent and relevant to the life of an equestrian. Equestrian sports come with their own different flavors of performance anxiety and other mental hurdles. I understand first hand about fear from riding dangerous horses for many years. I understand about pressure, expectation and desire. I will share my own personal stories and experiences to help students see the scientific "stuff" at work in real life. Participants (whether remote with Zoom or in person) receive handouts with highlights and key points of the presentation as well as continuing education resources. The Mental Mastery Workshops are a constantly evolving work in motion. As new information becomes available to me, I adapt and adjust my presentations to make that information available to YOU... just as I teach riders to adapt and adjust to their ever changing world.
